<p>Established as the 27th Fighter Wing in July 1947 and activated 13 months later at Kearney AFB, NE with the P-51, the wing moved to Bergstrom AFB in March 1949 and was redesignated 27th Fighter Escort Wing in February 1950 with the F-84. The unit subsequently changed to Strategic Fighter Wing and Fighter-Bomber Wing before finally becoming a Tactical Fighter Wing in July 1958. The F-101 was flown before a switch was made to the F-100 in 1959, when the wing moved to Cannon AFB. Despite commencing F-111D deliveries in October 1969, the wing continued to operate the F-100F until mid-1972. The F-111G began to be received from SAC during 1990, although only one squadron was assigned, rather than two as originally planned. The unit adopted Fighter Wing status in 1991, and exchanged the F-111D/G for the F-111E/F in 1993. EF-111As were transferred from Mountain Home AFB beginning in mid-1992.
